John's Grill has hosted private dining in the heart of Union Square since 1908. We are one of San Francisco's oldest restaurants and a downtown landmark, with three private dining rooms for groups of 14 to 180. Whether it's a corporate dinner, a rehearsal dinner, a milestone celebration, or a full buyout, our team handles the details so you can enjoy the room. Steps from the theaters, hotels, and offices of downtown San Francisco, we're an easy place for guests to reach and a memorable place to gather.
John’s Grill is happy to host private events for parties small or large. The restaurant has three different settings for private parties, all on the third level and accessible by stairs or elevator. The third level space is called Hammett’s Den, named for the mystery author who, in his San Francisco heyday, had an office in the nearby Flood Building and used to frequent John’s Grill.

Our Private Dining Rooms
The Club Room seats 14, or up to 20 across two tables. Best for board dinners, family celebrations, and smaller corporate groups.
The Astor Room seats 50 and holds 60 for a standing reception. Ideal for rehearsal dinners, company dinners, and cocktail receptions in Union Square.
Hammett's Den seats 100 and holds up to 180 standing. Our largest space, for holiday parties, large private events, and full restaurant buyouts.

John's Grill is at 63 Ellis Street, steps from Union Square. We are a short walk from the Westin St. Francis, the Hilton Union Square, the Powell Street cable car, and BART, and minutes from the theater district and Moscone Center.

How many guests can you accommodate? Our rooms seat 14 to 100, and Hammett's Den holds up to 180 for a standing reception. Full restaurant buyouts are also available.

The Club Room
Perfect for an intimate dining experience for groups up to 20. The Club Room can be set up with one long table of 14 people or 2 round tables of 10 each.

Astor Room
The Astor Room is the perfect space for parties between 50-60 people. The room has a rich décor of dark Oak panels and a large window that overlooks Ellis Street, which allows the natural light to shine through. The room is separated from the main dining room with glass accordion doors, which overlooks the dining room. It accommodates 50 people seated or 60 people for a cocktail reception.

Hammett’s Den
Hammett’s Den, our largest private room, encompasses the entire third floor, with coffered ceiling and a wall of windows. This room also has a private bar. It can be reserved for up 100-seated guests or 180 guests at a standing reception.
