A Historic San Francisco Steakhouse Since 1908

John’s Grill is a historic San Francisco steakhouse established in 1908. It opened only two years after the earthquake and quickly became one of the first major restaurants to reopen in downtown San Francisco. From the beginning it served steaks, seafood, and classic cocktails in a lively dining room that reflected the spirit of a city rebuilding itself.

Located near Union Square, John’s Grill became a gathering place for politicians, writers, musicians, entertainers, business leaders, and travelers. People met here to eat, talk, negotiate, and celebrate. It was known as a restaurant where important conversations happened and where the culture of San Francisco was shaped over dinner and drinks.

Throughout the twentieth century, John’s Grill remained a landmark restaurant in a city that constantly changed. It stood through the rebuilding years, through World War Two when thousands of young men passed through San Francisco before leaving for the Pacific, and through the cultural revolutions of the Sixties and later decades. The restaurant continued to welcome locals and visitors who saw it as a part of the authentic San Francisco experience.

Today, guests find vintage furnishings, dark wood paneling, historic photographs, and a classic American menu. Signature dishes include steaks, fresh seafood, and the famous Jack LaLanne Salad. The restaurant also features nightly live jazz in an intimate setting which adds to its atmosphere and makes it one of the best places in San Francisco for dinner and live music.
